Safe and Sound Repairs Missouri Bridges
COLUMBIA - Missouri weather can have damaging effects on bridges and roads, but the Safe and Sound program is working to fix those problems.
On average, a new bridge is opening every two and a half days.
In 2007, former Missouri Governor Matt Blunt approved legislation to improve damaged bridges all across the state.
Those 802 bridges were divided into two groups: 248 were selected for renovation and the remaining 554 will be completely replaced.
KTU Western Constructors was contracted by the state of Missouri to repair the lowest rated bridges in Missouri.
Now in it's second summer of construction, the Safe and Sound program is moving along faster than expected.
In the last 15 months, 192 bridges have been completed or repaired. Road closures have also cut down on time, only taking an average of 39 days to complete a project.
By the end of 2013 the program will have repaired 802 bridges all over Missouri.
