Safe to Return to Fair?
BOONE COUNTY - Some fair-goers and Boone County Fairgrounds' general manager think it's safe to return to the fair.
George Harris said there's double the security than before the shooting. Then, they had four officers patrolling the grounds. Now, they have eight.
"They've very graciously beefed up the security here through the Sheriff's Department," Harris said.
Harris also mentioned yellow shirted youth who monitor the fairgrounds to make sure everything's running smoothly.
Another change made to security is the way the gates are monitored.
"After we quit collecting money at the gates, well, that's when these people came in," Harris said referring to the people involved in the shooting,"so now when we stop collecting on the gate, the deputies of Boone County Sheriff's Department are on the gates."
On Wednesday evening the fair crowd was going strong.
Jefferey Staats said when the shooting happened they were a little worried.
"We heard the shots and closed our doors and got inside for a little while," Staats said.
But those interviewed aren't worried now.
"It's concerning, but I'm sure the sheriff's department and the police department have this under control," Ramsey Shouman, who attended the fair with his family, said.
Kimberly Kinney, who attended the fair with her friends and their children said,"There's going to be bad things that happen and as long as you mind your own business, do what you're supposed to do, the likelihood of something happening is far and few between."
The Boone County Fair runs until Saturday.
