School Bus Crash Aftermath
But, their parents were relieved Wednesday night when all the students turned out to be safe.
Help arrived just a few minutes after the bus crashed with 39 students from the Firley Family YMCA.
"We had people on the scene that were triaging these patients," said Gale Blomenkamp of the Boone County Fire Protection District.
The crash happened in the 9900 block of Route N near Pierpont, just south of Columbia. Emergency workers treated more than 40 people, including students and counselors.
"That's the process, and that's the way we're trained to deal with situations like this," added Blomenkamp. "Separate them out and triage them, get them to a treatment point, then transport them."
The bus driver and 17 students with minor injuries were taken to two Columbia hospitals. Two other students had moderate injuries, although firefighters said they should be fine.
"It could have been worse, had the bus rolled over, it could have been a lot worse," Blomenkamp said.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol said a back tire hit the shoulder of the road, sending the bus into the ditch.
Marketing Director Shelly Poire said YMCA officials contacted the children's families to update them on the situation. She expects more details from the highway patrol in the next couple of days.
