COLUMBIA - National School Bus Safety week starts Monday and Columbia Public Schools are participating.

This year's theme is "I See The Driver, The Driver Sees Me," and it emphasizes the need for extra caution when children are boarding and exiting school buses. This week reminds motorists to be attentive around school buses and be aware of the phrase "STATE LAW STOP While Loading and Unloading" which every is displayed on the back of every Missouri school bus.

The Columbia Public School's Transportation Department will present its Elementary School Bus Safety Progam at each of the district's 19 elementary schools. The district asks parents to make school bus safety a continual conversation with their children.

The department emphasizes certain safety tips including:

-Wait at the assigned bus stop on time and in a safe place.

-Obey the bus driver.

-Keep head, hands, feet and objects to yourself and inside the bus. Keep the aisles clear.
