MOBERLY - Moberly Area Community College and Moberly Public Schools wrapped up the Golden Drumstick Drive Challenge Monday. MACC challenged Moberly Public Schools to join a food drive for holiday dinners for needy families in Randolph County. The goal for MACC is to feed 150 needy families during the Holiday season.

Moberly Public Schools worked to beat MACC in the Golden Drumstick Drive Challenge.

The prizes are bragging rights and a golden drumstick trophy. MACC and Moberly Public Schools also raised money to buy each family either a turkey or ham. Each family will receive a complete Christmas meal, including dessert.

"It's really wonderful to see our students bring in items for what would be other students with in our building and other families here in the building," said Gratz Brown Elementary Principal Della Bell.

According to the Missouri Central Food Bank, there are nearly 100,000 people living at or below the poverty line in central Missouri. In Moberly Public Schools alone, more than 60% of students qualify for reduced lunch.

With Christmas break coming soon, programs like these may help struggling families.

"What's neat about this initiative is that our students having such a high free and reduced lunch population are actually been the ones to help, " said Moberly Public Schools Superintendent Mark Penny.

The drive will end late Monday, and the food will be ready for families to pick up at the Moberly Municipal Auditorium later in the week.

As of Monday afternoon, the partners had not yet announced which won the challenge.
