BENTON (AP) - A southeast Missouri man is jailed without bond, accused of strangling his mother and burning her body and her two dogs.

Firefighters found the remains of 48-year-old Cynthia Canoy on Aug. 7 inside a burned-out SUV in a cornfield outside Scott City.

The Southeast Missourian reports that Scott County authorities announced charges Tuesday against Canoy's 25-year-old son, Neil Howland Jr. He faces arraignment Wednesday on charges of first-degree murder, tampering, illegal burning and abandoning a corpse.

Online court records did not list an attorney for Howland.

A probable cause statement says Howland told investigators he strangled his mother with a dog leash at their home, then put her body and her dogs into her SUV and drove to the cornfield where he set the vehicle on fire.
