MARSHALL, MO -- The Missouri Valley College men's and women's basketball teams started their 2012-2013 seasons Friday night, as the women played on the road against Mount Mercy College at the Grand View Invitational in Des Moines, Iowa, and the men's team welcomed in Hastings College to Grover C. Redford Gymnasium.
The Lady Vikings came away with a 78-60 victory over Mount Mercy College to begin their campaign. The Lady Vikings took just a three-point lead into the halftime break, but shot over 51 percent from the floor in the second half, limiting Mount Mercy to just 23 percent shooting, to come away with the victory. Leading the way for MVC was Junior Alexis Sweet with 20 points on 7 for 11 shooting from the floor. Also in double-digits for the Lady Vikings were Senior Sami Jackson and Senior Cara Clark with 10 points apiece. The Lady Vikings also dished out 15 assists as a team, and out-rebounded Mount Mercy by a 40-30 margin. The win improves the Lady Vikings to 1-0 on the season, and they will be in action Saturday in Des Moines taking on the host school Grand View University. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. The men's basketball team was taken down by Hastings College 75-60 Friday night.
The Vikings trailed by single-digits heading into the halftime break, but over 50 percent shooting in the game by Hastings was enough to give the visiting team the victory. Leading the way scoring wise for MVC with 11 points apiece were Senior James Pope and Senior Michael Connor. The Vikings shot well from beyond the arc, as they connected on 60 percent of their three-point attempts. The loss drops the Vikings to 0-1 on the season and they next play Hannibal-Lagrange College at home Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
