SEC Switch Could Encourage Airport Expansion
COLUMBIA - Columbia Chamber of Commerce and candidates for Columbia City Council met Thursday night for the first public forum to discuss economic advancements. One of the suggestions to improve Columbia and surrounding communities' economies was expanding and improving the Columbia Regional Airport. Candidates for the second and sixth ward on the Columbia City Council gave their overall approval for the idea.
Earlier in the week a few business owners discussed the possibility of the airport renting out hanger space to private jet owners on a KFRU talk show. These jet owners could rent space during SEC game weekends. Airport officials told KOMU 8 that no spaces have been rented out so far.
Ward officials say they have come up with a few possible ways to fund the improvements at the airport. One option is the idea to increase bed tax at the city's hotels.
