Senate approved bill could allow companies to pay your sales tax
COLUMBIA - The Senate gave preliminary approval to a bill which would allow companies to pay its customers' sales tax.
An amendment was added to House Bill No. 517 that means no company would be required to pay their customers' sales tax, but those that do, could advertise it.
State Sen. Ed Emery, R-Lamar said, "I saw this as more of a freedom issue that was enabling merchants to pretty much do what they please in terms of how they sale their product."
Opponents of the legislation said it would trick customers into thinking they are not paying the tax. Sen. Rob Schaaf, R-St. Joseph, said companies will just pass along the cost of the tax on to consumers.
The bill will now head to the Senate Government Oversight and Accountability committee.
