Sexual Misconduct Allegation Rocks Meta
Members of Saint Cecilia Church called the allegation against Fr. John Schutty "unbelievable."
"Very nice to me. Pleasant. Liked to laugh. Loved a good joke, and a good healthy appetite," said restaurant manager Quee Caskey, who served meals to Schutty nearly every day for 11 years.
However, it was 20 years ago that the alleged sexual misconduct occurred--before Schutty joined the parish in 1988.
Parishioners said Schutty left last March. They thought for health reasons because he reportedly has leukemia.
The Diocese of Jefferson City said it found one allegation to be credible and it issued this statement last Sunday:
"In accepting the findings of the review team, Bishop Gaydos has informed Father Schutty that he will be retired without faculties. Father Schutty will no longer be permitted to celebrate the Mass and other sacraments or assume any other priestly functions in public. The restriction is effective immediately."
META residents aren't saying much.
"They're kind of like almost holding their breath, waiting for either confirmation of the accusation or complete dismissal, one of the two," said Caskey.
One couple that attends St. Cecilia Church said people shouldn't rush to judgment and noted the recent reinstatement of a priest in Louisiana, Mo., who was accused of sexually assaulting a minor.
