Sheriff's office warns of Cole County money scam
COLE COUNTY - The Cole County Sheriff's office is warning residents about phone calls that are potentially scamming people out of money.
A man who calls himself "Deputy or Sergeant Michael Jackson," is calling residents saying they have a warrant out for their arrest for failing to show up for jury duty.
To pay the warrant, he wants the phone scam victims to go to Walmart and purchase a Green Dot card.
A scam similar to this one surfaced in May 2015 where the caller tells the victim to meet him in court to pay, but later cancels and forces them to pay over the phone.
The sheriff's office urges the community to ignore any calls similar to this as they do not use Green Dot cards or make citizens pay over the phone.
