Shooting puts schools on lockdown and a man in the hospital
COLUMBIA – A shooting in Columbia left one man in the hospital and three schools on lockdown Tuesday afternoon.
Hickmann High School, Ridgeway Elemtary and Jefferson Middle School were locked down for about 30 minutes due to the proximity of the shooting, which happened in the 100 block of Third Avenue at around 1 p.m. There was no immediate threat to the schools, according to a statement from Columbia Public Schools.
The victim was in the hospital for a gunshot wound. Latisha Stroer of the Columbia Police Department said there is no suspect information yet.
Police do not know if the shooting took place inside or outside. There were no other people in a house involved in the shooting.
“We believe that the male who was shot flagged down another male in the area and that’s how we got the 911 call,” Stroer said.
A forensics team and detectives were talking to possible witnesses.
