Sign Ordinance Passes
Council members approved of the compromise between the Special Business District and business owners and passed the signs and awnings ordiance. Under the ordinance street level business signs can't exceed 32 square feet and upper level business will be restricted to 18 square feet. A representative from the Special Business District says he sees the sign ordinance as pro-business for the district.
"There are some new things in the sign ordinance that we think will attract people into the stores, as well as a special environment for shoppers," John Ott said.
Later in the night the council discussed the sidewalk master plan. The main objective of the plan is to get more sidewalks along the streets of Columbia with priority given to major roadways. The 48 projects in the plan include everything from Broadway to residential streets. It's a long term plan that can be modified or added on to.
