MU is the only school in the state with this new technology, thanks to $3.8 million to set up labs for nanotechnology and micro-electro magnetical systems technology.

"Research is very important to the state," said Engineering Dean Jim Thompson. "MU is a leader as far as research is concerned, and it's an extraordinary opportunity because it is cutting-edge."

To give you an idea of what size nanotechnology deals with, one nano is one ten-thousandth the diameter of a human hair. So, laboratories must include dust-free environments, called clean rooms, and yellow glass to filter light. Everyone must wear a special suit to enter a clean room to keep out any contamination.

The nanotechnology center will promote research in a broad range of categories.

"HIV virus testing is so expensive, our goal is to make reliable and cheap systems," said Schubhra Gangopadyhah, co-director of international microsystems and microtechnology.
