Sophia's restaurant announced it will go smoke-free February first.

The voluntary ban may not be a choice in a month. That's when the Columbia City Council will consider banning smoking in all Columbia restaurants.

Sophia's already has certain hours where it doesn't allow smoking.Owners say they got so much positive response to the smoke-free hours, they decided to make it a permanent ban.

"I think that market forces are kind of forcing us to go in that direction anyway. More and more people aren't smoking, more and more people are looking for a smoke free environment in order to enjoy their meal and have a nicer environment. And quite frankly as we've gone on from year to year, less and less people come in to smoke," said Matthew Jenne Addison's and Sophia's Co-owner.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, smoke-filled rooms can have up to 6 times the air pollution as a busy highway.
