Smoking Banned At The Columbia Library
The board passed the motion by a 10-3 vote at a meeting Thursday night. It will go into effect January 1, 2011.
Right now, the Columbia Public Library permits smoking 20 feet from the building's entrances. The library will not enforce people smoking in cars on its property.
This motion does not include the other two Daniel Boone Regional libraries; Southern Boone in Ashland and Callaway in Fulton.
Board member Rosie Gerding made a motion to ban smoking at all the libraries, but the board did not pass it.
Some members expressed concern against a smoking ban at the library in Fulton because the city is currently debating a smoking ban. That was not an issue for the Columbia library since smoking is already banned inside public places in the city. Columbia already has a ban in place.
The issue came up in part because of concerns for children walking through smoke coming in and out of the Columbia Public Library.
The board will wait to discuss smoking bans for the libraries in Ashland and Fulton at its next meeting.
