Some Elected Officials Getting Pay Raise in 2007
All elected officials would receive a $1,200 raise plus 4% of their salary. Associate circuit court judges would get even more. They currently make $96,000 a year. The Missouri Bar Association says some law graduates earn nearly the same in their first year of practice. The commission gave them the same $1,200 plus $2,000 for increased duties and the 4% raise of their total salary.
Representative Jeff Harris agrees with the judge salaries, but he doesn't think it should apply to everybody.
"I don't think we should be giving legislators a pay increase. It's pretty much that simple. I think we oughta be working on putting more money in the pockets of the average Missourian instead of more money in the pockets of the average politician," the said.
The executive and judicial branches will receive their raises in July, but lawmakers will have to wait until January of 2009.
