COLUMBIA - The first day of spring is approaching, and for many people it means spring cleaning is becoming a priority.

Cheryl Guthrie is the owner of New Beginning Consignment Clothing. She said consignment is a great way to both earn and save for consumers.

"I've always loved the concept of recycling and reuse. And in consignment the person bringing gets to make a little money. The person buying the clothes gets to save a little money. I mean it's a win-win situation all the way around."

The industry of resale is growing and is now a national trend. The Association of Resale Professionals website states, "First Research estimates the resale industry in the U.S. to have annual revenues of approximately $13 billion."

The site also adds, "With an increasing awareness of the importance of reducing pointless waste, we are progressing from a disposable society to a recycling society."

Guthrie has been in the business since 1982. She said Columbia is a great place for a consignment store.

"Columbia is wonderful. Columbia since it's a college town first of all, you get the college kids who always are into the very latest thing, and then you get, its a very mobile community," Guthrie said. "A lot of people come and go with the college students so you get lots of people coming in all the time, so you get things from, you know, people have come from the coast, they have vacationed in other countries, you get things from all over the world. Yeah, it is a great place to do this."

To sell your items at a consignment store, an appointment is typically required. New Beginning accepts everything from shoes, boots and purses to men's business clothing.
