Springfield mail center to remain open for now
SPRINGFIELD (AP) - The U.S. Postal Service is postponing plans to close a Springfield mail processing center.
The Springfield News Leader reports the center was set to close in July, with its operations moved to Kansas City, but the Postal Service said it's deferring consolidation plans until 2016.
Chris Bentley, president of the National Postal Mail Handlers Union Local 297, hails the decision to keep the center open for now. He said the continued presence of the processing center in Springfield means mail delivery would remain more efficient for Springfield customers.
He also said the plant would be hiring people to bring the center back up to full service for the fall and winter mailing seasons.
