Springfield Petition to Repeal Smoking Ban Has Enough Signatures
SPRINGFIELD - The Springfield city clerk says a local petition seeking to repeal a new smoking ban contained enough valid signatures to force a new vote on the issue.
The Springfield News-Leader reports City Clerk Brenda Cirlin certified the petition on Monday.
However, the city council could act on the proposal before an election is held.
The council can approve the petition as is, which would replace the smoking ordinance passed in April with earlier regulations. Another option would be to send the question to voters in June.
The new ban generally prohibits the use of tobacco products or electronic cigarettes in any indoor area where people work or the public has access. Opponents want more exemptions to the ban.
