St. Louis Co. seeks more study on health concern
CLAYTON (AP) - St. Louis County's top health official is joining in the call for further investigation of health concerns possibly linked to nuclear waste contamination in Coldwater Creek.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Dr. Dolores Gunn says a state report released Tuesday raised additional questions about the creek that runs from St. Ann to the Missouri River.
The state report showed high rates of leukemia, breast, colon and other cancers in eight zip codes near the creek, along with high rates of brain cancer among children near West Lake Landfill. Waste from World War II-era atomic bomb production ended up in the creek and landfill.
Cleanup of the creek is ongoing; The Environmental Protection Agency is still weighing a solution for the landfill.
