St. Louis police chief withdraws from mayor's race
ST. LOUIS (AP) — St. Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson has announced he's withdrawing from the mayor's race.
Dotson said in a statement Tuesday he believes that he can best serve the city as chief of police. Dotson said in the statement that crime is "the number one issue" in St. Louis, and "to combat it, we need less politics, not more."
Dotson announced his candidacy for the mayor's office last month, joining several other Democrats competing for the office now held by longtime Mayor Francis Slay who isn't running in next year's election.
Slay had earlier called on Dotson to resign his law enforcement post while he campaigned. But Dotson, police chief since December 2012, said then that he wouldn't step down as chief while seeking the mayor's office.
