Stabbing has North Columbia Residents Concerned
Even though police took the suspect, Helen Christian, into custody, the night left neighbors frightened.
"I was really surprised when I heard that it was practically in our own backyard," said neighbor Mary Casey. "And it's scary."
Mary Casey's lived in the area for almost 23 years.
She says she and her neighbors have noticed some changes."With the drugs and the crime going on, we're very concerned for our homes and our families." said Casey.
But the Columbia police say she might not need to worry as much as she is about the recent crime.
"It's just a spike in that area," said Ken Greggory with the Columbia police department. "I don't think it's a trend that's on the rise."
The department says rumors could be causing the concern.
"You may think that it's a rash of crime. That there's several stabbings or several burglaries. And sometimes there are but for the most part it's usually the story growing," said Greggory.
But Casey says she just wants to feel safe."I have true faith in our Columbia police department," said Casey. "But the problem is, we don't have enough of them over on this side of the town, until something does happen."
And police say they want to be where residents need them.
"If the community let's us know we'll work hand-in-hand with them to solve those problems." said Greggory.
Casey's son recently added lights to her house for extra safety. They both hope the recent crime will bring more police attention to the area.
The stabbing suspect is charged with domestic assault and armed criminal action. The victim suffered "non-life threatening" injuries.
