State and Boone County Settle Voter Info Dispute
For a year and a half, Boone County Clerk Wendy Noren argued with Secretary of State Robin Carnahan about the new system. Noren wanted to keep the county's system because it's more advanced than the state's.
The state finally agreed that Noren can send Boone County voter information to Carnahan's office everyday without changing systems.
"We will be able to continue to do all the programs we do that the state system doesn't provide," Noren explained, "our sample ballot mailing, the communication system with the polling places, the Internet side. Things we are going to have to lose if it has to go on the state software."
Carnahan's spokeswoman, Stacie Temple, added, "We resolved to work this out so they would be able to come up with the solution that allows Boone County to join the statewide voter registration system."
Noren said the compromise will save local taxpayers $150,000 per year. She hopes to finish programming the system by next week.
