State Unsure How to Modernize Rest Areas
WILLIAMSBURG - The rest area located seven miles east of Willamsburg sat boarded up and empty Wednesday, closed to visitors. The rest area is a casualty of steps to reduce the cost of maintaining highway rest areas and improving those that remain--a plan that has been in process for ten years.
So far the state has closed seven rest stops around the state, and plans to close three more. It currently costs $3.8 million to operate the 27 remaining rest stops. To finish a renovation plan adopted a decade ago would cost almost $100 million. MoDOT said it does not currently have that money in its budget.
