Storm Strikes Stations
All five of Cumulus' radio stations transmitting from Columbia were knocked off the air, including KFRU, KPLA, BXR, Q106.1 and the Buzz. The lightning strike disabled the entire computer network, leaving no way to get a signal on the air. Engineers have been working non-stop to fix the problems.
"The problem is that all of the studios, the equipment in the studios, a lot of it got toasted. So, we're not in studios right now. We literally have computers plugged into the transmitter that goes to the antenna so everyone can turn on and listen to it," explained Chris Kellogg of Cumulus Broadcasting.
Engineers were able to get KFRU and KPLA back on the air Saturday morning, and hope to have the other three back on later.
