Strong Spirit Keeps Sandbags Coming
Preparing for a flood isn't so easy.
But when the big muddy bursts these Hartsburg volunteers are a big help.
Volunteer Joe Bretthorst explains why he's helping.
"We live down here so we try to protect... take care of our own," said Bretthorst.
"Just keep filling, when you get down to one, fill another one."-"keep stacking them up"
It's deja vu for some here though it's been a while.
"The last time it happened was a long time ago."
For folks in Hartsburg this is just one small reminder of the Flood of 93 water completely covering the bridge. They know if the water gets much higher people are in for one wet mess. But not if these guys have a say.
"We're doing our part for living down here. It's a great community and good place to live."
This group started bagging about 9 PM and have been at it since.-"just pick it up and twist it." Some volunteers don't even call Hartsburg home.
"We appreciate all the volunteers that come down and dont live down here."
Volunteer Joh Alspaugh explains "We've been through this so many times, about once every ten years,".
A decade's deluge bringing together a towns spirit. About 50 volunteers showed up to help out in Hartsburg.
