Student brings BB gun to Columbia middle school
COLUMBIA - A student at a Columbia middle school brought a BB gun to school Tuesday.
West Middle School Principal Dr. Connie Dewey said the student brought the toy gun in his backpack. Dewey said students heard the boy talking about the gun, and they reported it to the office.
Dewey said school administrators investigated and took the gun away from the boy.
"I take this incident seriously, as it violates our school safety policies," she said in a letter to parents Tuesday.
Also in the letter, Dewey asked parents to check their children's backpack every day to make sure they are bringing only what they need to school.
"In order for our school to remain a safe haven, we must all work together - parents, staff and community members - to provide the quality environment that our children deserve," she said.
The Columbia Police Department said officers responded to the school for a weapons incident at 9:39 a.m
Dewey said West Middle School is taking appropriate disciplinary action against the student.
