Suspect Arrested in Murder
"We're not going to elaborate too much," said Capt. Brad Nelson, "but there was a lot of blunt trauma to the facial area."
The violent death surprised neighbors.
"Just kind of shocked," said Christy Kidwell, who lives on West Sugar Tree Lane. "I just moved here a month ago, and I thought it was a decent neighborhood."
Another resident, Scott Palmer, added, "It's kind of scary. There's a lot of kids in this neighborhood and, for something like that to happen, it's kind of scary."
Police said Byers is Columbia's second murder victim this year, compared with eight last year. They also said he was on probation, after being released in June from jail where he served time for possession of a controlled substance.
