RANDOLPH COUNTY - A suspect was in the hospital Monday evening with serious injuries after a car chase turned into a shoot out with deputies in Randolph County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol said a Randolph County Sheriff's deputy tried to pull a car over around 11 a.m. Monday for driving carelessly on Randolph County Road 2270. The highway patrol said the driver would not stop the car and drove toward U.S. Highway 24. The deputy started chasing the car when it wouldn't pull over.

The highway patrol said a state trooper put down spike strips near Missouri Route C. The car drove over the strips and kept driving for a bit until it went off the road, according to MSHP.

Troopers said the driver ran away from the car and fired a gun toward two Randolph County deputies who started to chase him. The highway patrol said the two deputies shot back at the suspect and hit him at least twice.

MSHP said an ambulance took the suspect to University Hospital with serious injuries. No law enforcement authorities were hurt.

The highway patrol said a female passenger in the car was taken in for questioning.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol's Division of Drug and Crime Control investigated the incident. The Randolph County Sheriff's Department, Moberly Police Department, Huntsville Police Department and Randolph County Ambulance District helped MSHP.
