Talent Concedes to McCaskill
"Earlier today, when the results looked good for Jim, I told everybody it's too early to be excited," said Republican Rep. Jim Avery of Crestwood. "And, with the high voter turnout, I thought it might be in his favor."
However, when Kansas City precinct results came in, McCaskill took a decisive lead. Talent supporters watched in disbelief as McCaskill gave her victory speech about 12:50 a.m. Wednesday.
"I thought she was overestimating," Talent supporter Jennifer Meyer said. "I thought we were going to laugh about this. This was going to be another Harry Truman event, you know, why is she doing this?"
Supporters said they hope to see Talent back in politics.
"Jim's lost elections before and landed on his feet, and made the best out of it, and I expect he'll do the same," Avery said.
"I just hope it's different tomorrow morning, and if Jim Talent runs for anything else, I am behind him 100%," Meyer added.
Talent did not talk to the news media after his concession speech.
