COLUMBIA - KOMU 8's Target 8 team looked into claims Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder made in a campaign ad, less than two weeks from the statewide primary

Target 8 researched each claim the Republican gubernatorial candidate made in his ad entitled "Fighting the Radical Left," to see whether is was true, false or misleading.

Afterwards, the Target 8 team contacted Kinder's campaign team to ask their response to our findings.

Each of the following lines from Kinder's video have been designated as true, false or misleading based on the research done by our target 8 team.

"Missourians are being force-fed Obamacare" - TRUE

Obamacare, officially known as the Affordable Care Act, requires every person to be covered by a minimum health care plan. This means each person needs to have some kind of health insurance.

On Healthcare.gov, the government website to learn about health care options, it says, "If you can afford health insurance but choose not to buy it, you must pay a fee called the individual shared responsibility payment."

Later in the section explaining the fee, it says, "The fee is calculated 2 different ways – as a percentage of your household income, and per person. You’ll pay whichever is higher."

However, the Affordable Health Care Act does outline exemptions from the requirement to have health insurance.

"Our teachers are forced to follow Common Core" - FALSE

Missouri adopted the national Common Core standards in 2010.

However, in 2014 Missouri lawmakers began the process of developing new state standards for education.

The new standards were to replace the national Common Core standards by the 2016-2017 school year.

"I am the only candidate with a proven record of defeating the radical left" - FALSE

Kinder is not the only gubernatorial candidate with a record of beating "liberal" legislation.

During her time as the Missouri House Speaker, Catherine Hanaway successfully passed Missouri's first concealed carry law by rallying the override of a veto from Democratic Governor Bob Holden.

Hanaway also rejected multiple proposals to increase taxes while serving as House Speaker.

Response from Kinder's Team:

Pam Dixon, spokeswoman for the Kinder Campaign, responded to each of the statements KOMU 8's Target 8 team designated as false.

In response to the first false claim, "Missourians are being force-fed Obamacare," Dixon said, "Our teachers were absolutely forced to follow Common Core. The reason they have new standards is because Lt. Gov. Kinder and Republican legislators led the fight against the federal intrusion on our state's education system."

Dixon's response to the second claim KOMU 8's Target 8 team designated as false - "I am the only candidate with a proven record of defeating the radical left" - was as follows:

"Lt. Governor Kinder highly respects Catherine Hanaway. However, she did vote against concealed carry while in the legislature and received a D rating from the NRA. While she may have since changed her views, at the time of the critical fight, she went against a bedrock conservative principle. Catherine also was unable to defeat her liberal Democratic challenger, Robin Carnahan, in her 2004 race for Secretary of State. Lt. Gov. Kinder on the other hand has always been able to defeat his liberal Democratic opponents. Since Catherine's loss in the 2004 elections, she has been largely absent from the fight to defend conservative principles. In that time, Peter Kinder has fought Obamacare, defeated Common Core, and exposed the radical left and their effort to catalog and database gun owners in Missouri."
