Teen Dies after SUV Swept Away
EXCELSIOR SPRINGS (AP) - The Highway Patrol says it's too early to say whether an Excelsior Springs teenager was talking on her cell phone, just before being swept to her death from a Clay County road. An elderly couple reportedly witnessed 16-year-old Brooke Baxter on the phone in her SUV. Patrol spokesman Scott Meyer says there is conflicting information that she was trying to call someone after being swept from the low water bridge into Williams Creek last night. Baxter's body was found inside the vehicle. Baxter had recently received her license. Meyer says driver inexperience was a factor. Meyer says it's a reminder how important it is to not cross a water-covered roadway.
