Testing Shows High Lead Levels in Festus Yards
FESTUS, Mo. - About 16 yards near a scrap metal recycling center in the St. Louis-area town of Festus have lead levels high enough to require remediation, and up to 15 more properties still need testing.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the yards are near the Shapiro Brothers scrap metal recycling center. Residents were told at a public meeting Thursday that cleanup agreements could be finalized with a few weeks.
Some residents expressed concerns because details of the agreement won't be public before they are permanent. Some also questioned why the insides of homes are not factored in cleanup plans.
MW Recycling bought the facility in 2011 and will pay for and conduct the cleanup with Missouri Department of Natural Resources oversight.
