The City of Columbia Hosted Two Environmental-Friendly Events
COLUMBIA - The City of Columbia kicked off two events Saturday with a green theme.
Columbia Parks and Rec hosted its annual Arbor Day Tree Giveaway event Saturday.
1000 bare-root seedlingswere available for citizens to pick up and TreeKeeper volunteers were at the event to answer tree-related questions. Event coordinator David Dittmer said the seedlings are from Missouri Department of Conservation and included 10 different native Missouri tree species, including bald cypress, northern red oak, flowering dogwood and redbud.
About 1,900 volunteers from 137 groups registered in the annual Cleanup Columbia trash pickup event. Although some of the groups postponed the event due to the rain, a lot still hit the road and cleaned up their assigned city blocks.
This is the 16th year of the event and this year, the city provided volunteers with a new type of bag. Compared to the orange bags used in previous years, the new green bags are biodegradable. The city encouraged volunteers to use them and recycle the trash they picked up in the streets.
