The District Gives Date Night a Try

COLUMBIA - Tuesday night was The District's test run of Date Night.  Shoppers could go out to dinner anywhere in the district and take their receipts to participating stores.  Shoppers with receipts could get a discount at the store and free dessert.

Date night coordinator Lisa Klenke said things were thrown together at the last minute.  Date night was only advertised on Twitter, Facebook and 15 posters were hung up around downtown Columbia.   Individual stores tried promoting, too.  Elly's Couture sent an e-mail out to everyone on its e-mail list.  Swank Boutique and Butterfly Tattoo both tweeted about date night to all of their followers.

Elly Bethune, owner of Elly's Couture said her store participates in all the events The District holds.  "Anything that we can collectively do just downtown as a group, just to get more people down here instead of maybe thinking about going to the mall."

Stores and restaurants decided they wanted to work together, and date night was the answer.  Klenke said Tuesday nights are generally slow, so this will hopefully bring more shoppers downtown.

Date night was considered moderately successful.  Some stores had more shoppers than others.  All stores were busier than usual, but none were jammed packed.

Klenke said if there is going to be another Date Night, The District needs to do more advertising on social media websites.
