The Myth of Rain on Good Friday

Have you heard of the theory that it storms on Good Friday in the afternoon between 12 p.m. and 3 p.m.?

The Christian belief is Christ’s crucifixion occurred on Good Friday and, while this was happening, skies became stormy while the earth began to shake. Historians have documented this in Roman literature from that time period.

There is a belief that it has continued to storm on every Good Friday afternoon and this legend has been carried on for generations.

Records from Columbia since 1890 show it has not rained on every Good Friday. In fact, Columbia has seen precipitation only 54% on a Good Friday. However, this is significantly higher than the climatological average of a 40% chance for precipitation between March 20 and April 20. In addition, a trace of snow was been received nearly 12% of the time on these days.

So, maybe there is some plausibility to this myth. Keep in mind, it is spring in Missouri and climatological numbers state the chance for precipitation is nearly 40% between March 20 and April 20.

What other Good Friday or Easter weather myths have you heard? Have you heard that if it rains on Good Friday, it will be sunny on Easter? Or, what about the one that says if it rains on Easter, it will rain for the next 6 Sundays? Have you heard that if it is windy on Easter, it will be rainy for the next 6 Sundays? This may make sense because the storm track in April is on a 2-3 day cycle due to a more active jet stream for the time of the year.
