Thieves Steal $100k in Copper Wire From Columbia Business
BOONE COUNTY - Thieves stole an estimated $100,000 in copper wire from APAC Industries north of Columbia after the business closed on Wed., Nov. 30.
Sheriff's deputies responded to APAC Industries Thursday morning after company personnel reported about 45 spools of coated copper wiring missing. There were no signs of forced entry and sheriff's deputies believe the suspects may have entered from an adjacent property.
The Sheriff's Department says it has responded recently to several thefts of copper and other metals at construction companies, work sites and public utility locations. Detective Tom O'Sullivan said the high price of copper is making theft more appealing.
"We have made several arrests and then that kind of slowed it down for a while," O'Sullivan said. "But because copper is commanding such a high price, that increases the number of potential thieves out there."
The suspects usually take the materials to recycling facilities for resale. Anyone with information about the crime is urged to call CrimeStoppers at 573-875-TIPS.
