Three young men fall from cliff in Stephens Lake Park

COLUMBIA - Two young men are in University Hospital this evening after falling from a cliff. A third man fell, but he was not taken to the hospital. 

The cliff near Stephens Lake Park  is about 18 feet high, and the two 19-year-olds were sent to the hospital in ambulances with potentially serious injuries.

"Our crews arrived on scene and were quickly led by bystanders to the Hinkson Creek area, near Sherman's Dam," Battalion Chief John Metz said. "Our crew found two individuals, two 19-year-old males, at the base of that dam, in the creek, with potentially serious injuries."

Because the injuries were potentially serious and access to the individuals was difficult, an additional ambulance and fire personnel were called to the scene to help with the rescue.

Before KOMU 8 arrived on scene, some of the victim's friends were already there. After the victims left in the ambulances in rescue stretchers, the friends quickly followed in their own vehicles.

Metz said he is unsure of how the young men fell from the cliff or what their current conditions are.

It is not known how the individuals fell off the cliff at Sherman's Dam in Stephen's Lake Park in Columbia, Missouri on October 23, 2014. According to Columbia firefighters, this is the first time anyone has been injured at Sherman's Dam.
