Tigers Obtain Six Match Wins at Wake Forest Invite
WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Mizzou tennis team won 4-of-6 singles and 2-of-3 doubles matches during the second day at the Wake Forest Invitational Saturday.
The Tigers improved their doubles play at the Invitational with two wins in second day action. Sophomore Rachel Stuhlmann and freshman Ashleigh Chiaf paired up to overcome Wake Forests' Rebecca Siegler and Zane Zarina, 8-4.
"I was pleased with the doubles team of Rachel and Ashleigh this morning," Head Coach Sasha Schmid said. "They played much better and beat a team from Wake Forest this morning."
Additonally, the Mizzou duo of junior Maria Christensen and freshman Alex Clark dominated their first doubles match of the day and beat Jordan Johnston and Barbora Lazarova of Elon, 8-0.
While Stuhlmann came away with a great win, 7-5, 6-1 against Marine Wieliczko of ETSU, Christensen and Clark battled their opponents in the main draw. Clark was able to come away with two more wins in the singles draw after defeating Zane Zarina of Wake Forest 7-6 (5), 6-1 and Brites Moniz-Soares of Davdison 6-3, 6-3. By winning the semi final match, she will play in the finals match tomorrow. Christensen contested against Wake Forest's Kayla Duncan for three sets but was overcome 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.
"In singles play Rachel got a nice win, and Maria and Alex fought hard in the main draw to reach the semi finals of their flights," Schmid said. "Maria lost a hard fought three set match. Alex competed very well today and played a high level of tennis. Overall, we had a good day."
