Time for School Shots
The required shots prevent measles, mumps, tetanus, hepatitis A and hepatitis B. An optional shot was added to the list last year.
"Probably the newest shot I've dealt with is the D-Tap, the tetanus with the pertussis," said nurse Susan Raaz.
Pertussis is the fancy word for whooping cough. There were 21 cases in 2004 in Boone County. Although only two cases have been reported so far in 2006, Raaz recommends the D-Tap. There were 25,000 cases of whooping cough in 2004 in the U.S. But the D-Tap shot has kept that number steady in the past two years.
