Timeline highlights MU season as Tigers gear up for Citrus Bowl
COLUMBIA - The Missouri Tigers football team plays in its 31st bowl game in program history Thursday, taking on the Minnesota Golden Gophers in the Buffalo Wild Wings Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Florida.
The appearance marks the 10th bowl game for Missouri (10-3) under head coach Gary Pinkel, in his 14 years as MU's head coach. Missouri is 14-16 overall in its previous 30 bowl outings, including a 5-4 record in nine appearances under Pinkel.
The New Year's Day matchup is Missouri's second Citrus Bowl appearance. In MU's first appearance in 1981, Missouri topped Southern Mississippi 19-17, back when the game was called the Tangerine Bowl.
Minnesota (8-4) is playing in its 17th bowl game all-time and its third straight bowl game under Big Ten Coach of the Year Jerry Kill.
Missouri owns a slim 4-3-1 series advantage over Minnesota in their previous eight meetings. The teams haven't played each other since 1970.
