It's a thankless job... Scraping playdough off the carpet and trying to get permanent marker off a school desk top. In tonight's sarah's story it's all in a days work for a mexico school custodian named oscar ulrich . Some people wear their heart on their sleeve. Oscar wears his on his hat. You can tell a lot about a person by how he wears his hat."he always wears a hat."At hat that at 95 years old, reflects oscar uhlrich's upbeat attitude."it's actually not work, it's fun." Oscar is a school custodian at hawthorne elementary. "this is my trademark...That bill turned up."...a trademark that's rarely far from his head. "howdy howdy."But in a few moments, something will happen... That will prompt oscar to take it off."shh shh shh."At 95, it's not just his age that's impressive. Oscar served his country during the second world war. He can fix anything and completely rebuilt this 1978 pinto from engine to frame. "he's always fixing desks or pencil sharpeners or something like that."One of nine children, oscar used to sew clothes for his brothers and sisters.Today he uses that talent to mend holes in the school mascot."we love oscar and we're here to take care of him," hawthorne principal lynn becker said."oscar lost his wife a couple years ago and i think it helps him get going in the morning to have us to take care of." teacher fran robley said."it's about the best job i've ever had and i like the kids and the teachers. I don't know i guess they look after an old guy i guess." ulrich said."on my birthday, he came into my room and said here's a gold coin for you. I always give the teachers gold coins on their birthdays and it was a gold sacajawea dollar." teacher pam ryburn said."we always tell him good night and we'll see him tomorrow. He says i'll see you tomorrow i hope i hope...And that's how he ends the day with us everyday," assistant principal angie watson said. But this time...The day will end differently for oscar uhlrich. "oscar, i need you at my office please. Oscar, could you come up to my office?" After 95 years...No better day than his birthday for his colleagues to tip their hat . "surprise!!! Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday dear oscar. Happy birthday to you."After the chorus, birthday cake and a special birthday present. And for the first time in a long time, oscar took off his hat. (Applause)" there's nothing wrong with me as far as i know and i'm lucky to be this old. I don't believe i've had a job i enjoyed as much as this."(More applause)With videographer brad noblitt, that's a sarah story. (Applause)"happy birthday dear oscar...Happy birthday to you..(cheering).".
