JEFFERSON CITY - January 22nd marks the 43rd anniversary of the Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade decision, a court case many people cite when looking at abortion issues.

The 2016 Missouri Legislative session began January 6th and a multitude of bills regarding abortion have been proposed and discussed.

Below are brief summaries of some legislation, along with links to the bill in its entirety.

Senate Bill 644 proposes that "Under this provision, no mother, father, or any other person shall knowingly donate or make an anatomical gift of the fetal organs and tissue resulting from an abortion to any person or entity for medical, scientific, experimental, therapeutic, or any other use."  It also proposes changes in the privileges a doctor needs to have at an area hospital for them to perform an abortion.

House Bill 2247 says "Neither public funds nor governmental economic incentives shall be expended, paid, provided, granted, or authorized to or for the benefit of an existing or proposed research project or an existing or proposed economic incentive project that involves abortion services, human cloning, or prohibited human research."

Senate Bill 802 proposes that an abortion report be submitted to the of health and senior services and would include "Certification that the attending physician does not have any knowledge that the woman sought the abortion solely because of a prenatal diagnosis, test, or screening indicating Down Syndrome or the potential of Down Syndrome in an unborn child."

Since the beginning of the legislative session, KOMU 8 has covered hearings about abortion licensing for the Columbia Planned Parenthood when a federal judge ruled its license can't be revoked by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services.

This is not a complete list of all abortion legislation proposed during this legislative session. All bills are available on the Missouri General Assembly website.
