Tornado Messages Fail to Include Drill Information
COLUMBIA - A statewide tornado drill scheduled for Tuesday included a mass message to MU employees and students that failed to mention the fact the message was part of a drill.
Land line phones rang to messages telling the answerer to "Take Cover Immediately." Text messages buzzed phones across the city with the same message. The University of Missouri emergency alert system made the calls and texts, as well as sending e-mails to recipients. But only the e-mails noted the message was a test, saying "THIS MESSAGE IS FOR TEST PURPOSES ONLY."
The lack of a test notice on the phone calls and texts brought questioning calls to the KOMU 8 newsroom, with callers asking whether the threat was real. Most questioned why the messages would not note they were made as a drill.
