MARIES COUNTY — Maries County Sheriff's Office and the Missouri State Highway Patrol responded to Highway 68 for a report of a motor vehicle accident Monday afternoon.
A truck overturned, ejecting one occupant from the vehicle, according to a press release from the Maries County Sheriff's Office. The ejected male was pronounced dead on the scene. The operator of the vehicle was transported to Phelps County Hospital and later pronounced dead. Names are being withheld pending notification of the next of kin.
Deputies located open alcohol containers around the accident site, and it is suspected that alcohol is a contributing factor in the accident, according to the press release.
"This is exactly why the Maries County Sheriff's Office takes a tough stand on drinking and driving," Maries County Sheriff Chris Heitman said.
Sheriff Heitman would like to remind people to be responsible and avoid drinking and driving.
