Two Owls Compete on Day One at Nationals

MARION, IN - Six members of the William Woods University Men's and Women's outdoor track and field team are competing this week at the 2011 NAIA National Championships. The meet is taking place at the Outdoor Sports Complex on the campus of Indiana Wesleyan University.

Sophomore Anthony Stockton competed Thursday in the Hammer Throw. Stockton finished 21st out of 30 throwers in the event. He recorded a top throw of 161' 10". Lindenwood University's Bruno Boccalotta won the event with a throw of 199' 08". Stockton also qualified for Nationals in the Shot Put. The men's Shot Put will begin at 1 P.M. on Saturday.

Sophomore Terrell Shannon competed in the prelims of the 800 meter run on Thursday. Shannon finished 25th in a field of 34 runners. He finished the event with a time of 1:56.40. He missed the final cut for the semifinals in the event by 2.04 seconds.

Sophomore Matt Brumit qualified for Nationals in the High Jump. Brumit is the school record holder in the event. He is making his first trip to the NAIA National Championships. Brumit won the AMC Championship in the high jump. He will compete at 6 P.M. on Friday.

Freshman Whitney Burton also qualified for Nationals in the High Jump. She was named the AMC Women's Track and Field Athlete of the Week three times this season. Burton won the AMC Championship and holds the WWU school record in the event. She will compete at 2 P.M. on Saturday.

Sophomore Ryan Meyer qualified for the Owls in the 5000 meter run. Meyer is the school record holder in the event and is making his first appearance at the Outdoor National Championships. He was named the AMC Men's Track and Field Athlete of the Week on three occasions. Meyer will compete in the semifinals at 7:30 P.M. on Friday. The finals will take place at 5:35 P.M. on Saturday.

Senior Jason Rose is the only upper classman making the trip to Nationals. Rose qualified for the Marathon. He is the school record holder in the Half Marathon. Rose is making his first trip to Outdoor Nationals and will compete at 6 A.M. on Saturday.
