Two Tigers Earn Conference Honors
COLUMBIA -- Senior Mary Burke and Freshman Rachel Updike have been honored by the Big 12 Conference this week as Gymnast of the Week and Newcomer of the Week after the Tigers topped Southern Utah on January 13. The award is the first of the season for Burke and the sixth in her career. This is the second consecutive week this season that Updike has been named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week, and the first time that Missouri has received the award in back-to-back weeks.
The award comes for Burke after she took the all-around title against Southern Utah. She posted a season-high 39.175 all-around score and also earned the bars title at the meet with her 9.875 score. Burke set season-high scores on vault, bars and beam, and she matched her career-high score on vault with a 9.850.
Updike was also a standout at the Tigers' meet against Southern Utah. She matched her season and career-high score on beam with a 9.850 and also took home the vault title. Updike has been honored by the Big 12 Conference for two consecutive weeks as Newcomer of the Week this season.
Mizzou hosts No. 16 Denver on Friday, January 20 at the annual Pink Out meet. The first 500 fans to arrive at the Hearnes Center will receive free t-shirts, and one dollar of every ticket sold will go to benefit breast cancer research.
