COLE COUNTY - Deputies responded to a report of a child found wandering down the 3900-block of Dewberry Drive early Wednesday morning.
Around 1:30 a.m., a Cole County resident found the child and called the Cole County Sheriff's Department. Deputies responded to the call and upon arrival, found the child to be in good health with no apparent signs of injuries or abuse. Deputies then attempted to contact people from each apartment building on the street, but no one recognized the child.
Around 4:00 a.m., a woman called 911, saying she was the legal guardian of the child.
According to the caller, her friend's 13-year-old son had been taking care of her child that night while she and the boy's mother went shopping. The boy said he fell asleep around 11:00 p.m. and did not hear the child leave the apartment or the deputies knocking on his door following the discovery of the child.
The child was taken into Children's Division custody, where he will remain pending the outcome of the investigation.
