CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -The undefeated No. 7 Mizzou Wrestling Team suffered its first loss of the season to unranked Northern Iowa on Friday, 24-10.
Early on Mizzou had an opportunity to cut the gap in half at 141 pounds in a matchup between Trevor Jauch and UNI's No. 19 Joey Lazor. However, Jauch fell short, allowing the 6-0 deficit to become 9-0.
Upsets only set the Tigers back further at both 165 and 174 pounds, causing Missouri No. 8 senior Zach Toal to fall to No. 10 Cooper Moore and No. 18 Mikey England to lose to UNI's Cody Caldwell.
While some individuals on the team found success, such as freshman Joey Lavallee at 157 pounds who picked up his first career dual win, once the deficit had developed there was no way the Tigers could fight back.
"We showed our immaturity tonight," Head Coach Brian Smith said following the loss. "We talk about wrestling for a full seven minutes, and tonight we didn't do that in some matches. We have to get better."
